When I look back, my creative activities in crossing overseas that occurred in the last decade enabled together with photography. The power of transportation to bear me to new places paralleled the camera's capacity to capture visual appearances and deliver them into new contexts. I lived in the space and time of the memory of the homeland and the reality of the overseas. I have been simultaneously present and absent in both places. In my case, the camera wasn't only a tool as an ontological guarantee of the subject's being but also of myself. Photography was dealt with as a technical alternative that replaces my eyes and memory and my ability to see and remember.As a stranger, looking over the lens, I perceived the external world as fascinating and frightening. Looking through the lens, I saw where I'm not and from the place of others. Looking at a photograph, I recognized what I have seen was but no longer present is. Despite its ordinary familiarity, this form of disembodied perception maintained a strong sense of uncanniness. Thus the uncanny became a constitutive aspect of my creative experience of the outer world where photography carried out an essential role in the recording and transference of emotion and desire, further, became a fundamental way of visualization in my practice. 22/03/21 Sunyoung Park
